When you have a movie that sullies the honorific name of one of the greatest monsters of all time, it's best to get a better representation released as fast as possible; which is basically what happened with "Godzilla 2000." Made two years after the American version, Godzilla was put back in the hands of it's creator, Toho, basically being what the American version should have been. "Godzilla 2000" was the first version to be released in North American theaters since 1985's "Godzilla 1985"... yeah. Anyway, Godzilla is back, so how's the movie? It's ok.
When it comes to movies, what I look for mostly are plot and characters. The plot, unfortunately, is nothing special, however one of the best things is that Godzilla actually fights another monster at the end of the film. While it's often a staple for the franchise, in most reboots Godzilla is going solo; so it's a nice treat for fans. The characters are pretty good, far better than the US version's, with good personalities and having a good relationship with one another. The dialogue is a little wooden, but that's to be expected from a translated dub. The effects are pretty good, say for a CG shot of Godzilla swimming underwater, but it's sometimes better when there's actually something in front of the camera; even if it's just a guy in a rubber suit.
GODZILLA 2000: B
This is a franchise that has lasted over sixty years, with 29 movies under it's belt. In the coming year, Godzilla will rise once more, will it be a huge pile of crap like 1998? Will it be a fair addition to the franchise like 2000? Or will it be a masterpiece that stands toe to toe with the original 1954 version? Only one way to find out...

1998, Hollywood attempted to introduce Godzilla to mainstream American audiences. Giving a fresh new take, and using modern CG graphics, to revamp a three decade movie franchise... and boy does it suck!
Now don't get me wrong, it's not as bad as so many people say it is. Hell, when I was a kid, I did like this movie, but i never thought of it as a Godzilla film; and that is the biggest flaw this movie has against it, the "Godzilla" name. Without it, it is a semi-decent monster movie; but with the name "Godzilla", you are stepping into a franchise that has lasted over three decades before hand, and that can cause a ton of pressure. Now the question is, would it be a better movie if it was called something else? ... No.
Even if you got rid of the title (or call it "Zilla", as referred to by the fans) it has wooden dialogue, poor CG work (this was made after Jurassic Park for god's sakes), awful writing, and the monster just sucks. Nowadays, the film is looked at as a film you can watch, and laugh at of stupid it is; But in the 90's the damage was done. Critics hated it, fans hated it, and it almost killed a great, yet often cheesy, film franchise.

GODZILLA (1998): D+
So if Godzilla 1998 almost killed the franchise, how did survive long enough even to this day, with a new Godzilla movie announced to be released in 2014? Well we'll talk about that next time...

Now that is an amazing piece of Japanese cinema; and the american translated version was, while not as good as the original, still a very good movie that was able to introduce western audiences to now what is considered the best movie monster of all time. Though the translated version is good, I highly recommend the original version.
GOJIRA(original Japanese version): A+
Alright, let's see what is next...
Ohhh crap
